6 Staffing Agency Myths: Busted!
Let’s clear up some common misconceptions about staffing agencies and their use by potential employees and the companies who hire through these agencies.
Myth #1: Staffing agencies don’t find permanent positions.
Truth: Over the course of a year, America’s staffing companies hire approximately 15 million temporary and contract employees. Most of them (76%) work full time. This is nearly the same number as the overall workforce (82%).
Half (49%, to be precise) of staffing employees say it’s a great way to get a permanent job. Nine out 10 said staffing work made them more employable. One-third (35%) of these employees were offered a permanent job by a client where they worked on an assignment. Two-thirds (66%) of those employees accepted their offers of permanent employment.
Staffing agencies offer a diverse selection of jobs and find positions for people in all types of industries and types of companies. They can find contract, contract-to-hire, and direct hire openings. Many companies use staffing agencies to evaluate talent for specialized positions or sometimes with the goal of filling positions more quickly. Staffing agencies often save businesses valuable time, offering their own recruiting and screening process and multiple recruiters working on a given job request.
Permanent employment remains a top priority for most staffing employees. For one in five, scheduling flexibility is a key reason for choosing temporary and contract work. Their assignments range from a few hours to several years. The overall employment tenure averages just over three months.
Myth #2: Staffing agencies charge employees to find them work.
Truth: Employers compensate the staffing agency who hires the individual. Companies pay the staffing agency to find and recruit top talent for temporary and permanent positions. Hiring through a staffing agency saves the employer time, hassles, and resources. Companies hire staffing agencies because they have access to top-rated talent, skills and knowledge, as well as flexibility that an employer might not possess when hiring on their own.
Myth #3: Working with staffing agencies is the only step necessary in a job search.
Truth: Staffing agencies comprise one part of a successful approach to finding a job. People should continue to use the other resources they have, such as online job boards, industry associations, professional networks, and personal circles.
Three items to note:
- A reputable staffing agency will not suggest that people stop searching for employment on their own.
- Using more than one staffing agency at the same time can hinder a person’s chances of becoming hired. This is because the same resume could show up several times and be considered excessive and therefore disregarded.
- Not all staffing agencies are the same. The top agencies take a consultative approach, tailoring their services to meet employees’ and businesses’ unique needs. They use recruiters who know specific industries and offer a dedicated business development manager for each assignment.
Myth #4: Staffing agencies don’t help with employees’ training, nor do they care about job satisfaction.
Truth: The success of staffing agencies’ clients keeps the agencies in business. Staffing agencies, therefore, work hard to help employees develop the skills and certifications needed for the job. Moreover, they will review applicants’ résumés and provide career coaching.
Nine out of ten staffing employees say they were satisfied with their staffing company. Quality staffing agencies offer benefits programs that include a 401(k) plan, health insurance, service bonus, and holiday pay.
Myth #5: Staffing agencies are for finding manual labor or entry-level admin jobs.
Truth: Staffing agencies find jobs for people in nearly every industry, job, and type of company. With today’s evolving job market, more firms are using staffing agencies to fill specialized positions. Staffing agencies place professional, managerial, and technical candidates.

Myth #6: Substantial income isn’t possible when people find a job via a staffing agency.
Truth: A staffing agency provides the negotiating power of a team of professionals. The agency understands the industries they work with and know how to market people’s skills and abilities in a compelling way. They are pros at negotiating a salary or rate of pay that people want.
